Credit Mix: Manage the Debt You Need

Credit mix is about experience with account types. The useful goal is responsible management of necessary borrowing, not collecting a loan in every category.

Revolving and Installment Accounts

Credit mix generally accounts for 10% of FICO’s framework. Revolving accounts, such as cards, let balances change within a limit. Installment accounts, such as auto loans or mortgages, have a repayment schedule. The model also considers how you have managed those accounts.

You do not need one of every account type, and variety cannot cancel out poor payment history.

A Better Comparison Than Counting Accounts

Example: purpose before variety

Imagine someone with a responsibly managed card who is offered a small installment loan they do not need. Compare the loan’s fees, interest and scheduled payments with the actual reason for borrowing. Adding an account solely to chase points leaves a real payment obligation, whether or not the score changes.

Questions Before Adding Debt

  • What does this account pay for, and would I need it without a score goal?
  • What are the full fees, interest and monthly payment?
  • Can I keep all existing payments current after adding it?
  • How does the application fit the timing of my intended loan?

These are planning questions, not a formula for loan approval. If you already have different account types, focus on their repayment and balances.

Keep the Priorities in Order

Credit mix is a smaller category than payment history and amounts owed. Review those first rather than assuming account variety is the main obstacle.

Use the five-factor overview to decide which part of your report needs attention. If your intended financing has specific history requirements, ask the lender to explain them before taking on another obligation.
