Payment History: Build a Record Lenders Can Review

Payment history is the largest category in the general FICO framework. Start by protecting your next payment, understanding any past-due accounts and checking that the reported history is accurate.

What the History Shows

Payment history generally carries 35% of the FICO breakdown. It considers repayment across accounts, including how overdue a payment became, amounts past due, how many accounts have problems and how recently those problems occurred. Collections and bankruptcies can also matter.

One late payment is not the entire profile. The complete record matters, and clean payment history alone does not guarantee a top score.

A Payment Calendar You Can Use

Example: three accounts, one checklist

Suppose a card is due on the 8th, an auto loan on the 15th and another card on the 24th. Make a three-row calendar with the amount due, the account funding it and a reminder before each date. Check that automatic payments actually completed. This is an organization example, not a score forecast.

If You Are Behind or Find an Error

Contact the creditor about a realistic path to becoming current. Continuing to miss payments while waiting for a score improvement makes the underlying problem harder to manage.

If a late payment is inaccurate, gather the relevant statement and payment record. Dispute it with the credit reporting company and the business that supplied it, keeping copies. A dispute is for inaccurate information; it is not a promise to remove accurate history.

Your Next Review

  • List the next due date for every account.
  • Separate genuinely past-due balances from information you believe is wrong.
  • Keep a record of creditor conversations and dispute documents.

There is no guaranteed point increase or fixed recovery date. Review the other four credit factors so you do not overlook balances or recent borrowing.
